This place has everything you could want from a cosy watering hole - jazz tunes playing, flickering candlelight, trinkets dotted around and a lively local crowd.

Cafe de Dokter is one of the city’s many brown cafes, or bruine kroegen, which serve up well priced beers and spirits.

These are small historic bars that got their name from their wooden bar and furniture, dimly-lit interior and smoke-stained walls. They’re a great spot to find a cheap local beer or a shot of Dutch gin - genever - as well as simple tasty bar snacks like bitterballen (deep fried meatballs) and cheese.
