This hotel was completed in the 1920s, and was intended to be a hotel for Dutch shipping line KHL. However they went bankrupt - not helped by this project costing 8 times more than projected!
The building housed immigrants and refugees, and even became a juvenile detention centre, and then an artists' studio space.
A competition in 1996 decided that it should be restored as a hotel, which finally happened in 2004, when it opened as the Lloyd Hotel.
The 166 rooms were designed by local artists, and no two were the same. They ranged from 1 star all the way up to 5 star in terms of quality. So you can perhaps see how the room James and I stayed in - with the ginormous bed - ended up being here!
The Lloyd Hotel closed in 2021 but was reopened by The Hoxton in 2023. They updated the decor but kept some of the quirky concept rooms.
It's a stunning building, so even if you don't book a stay, I'd recommend checking out the bar or restaurant. It's in the Zeeburg district in the north east of the city, nicely tucked away from the hustle and bustle.
