Are Compression Packing Cubes Worth It?

I have used compression packing cubes for years and they’re my secret for packing more in a hand luggage only bag!

What are compression packing cubes?

Compression packing cubes are small bags to pack things into, but they come with two zips. You use the second one to really squish air out and compress your stuff.

What is the difference between a compression bag and a vac bag?

They are different to vac bags, where you don’t need to squeeze the air out by rolling them or using a mini vacuum cleaner.

Vac bags are typically a clear plastic bag with a ziplock top, and some will require vacuums to close (hence the name, but these are more suited to household ones), some come with small electric pumps and some are roll by hand.

Should I roll or fold?

Rolling may decrease your chances of having creased clothing, but folding may make it easier to pack as you squish the air out, flattening your items. Ultimately, it’s up to you!

Will compression packing cubes make my clothes creased?

Probably yes! It’s a risk you’ll have to take but may be mitigated slightly by rolling. You can buy things like decreaser spray or mini travel irons if that’s something you’re concerned about. Personally, I’ll hang my clothes in the bathroom to get a bit of steam on them and call it a day!

The Best Compression Packing Cubes

Now it’s time to take you through some of my absolute favourite compression cubes that have been tried, tested and bought by the team here at Holiday Expert.

This is a set of four from Eono – who make a bunch of different cool travel items from packing cubes to microfibre towels. I’ve had this set for years too and taken them on many trips.

I like that the mesh panel on the front allows your clothes to breathe and you can easily identify what’s inside. These cubes are all slightly different sizes allowing you to pack all sorts inside.

These are a bit pricier than the entry-level bags, but you can absolutely tell the difference in the quality of the material and the zippers.

There are a few colour options, but I like the fact that with this lighter colour, you can see your clothes through them more easily. Would definitely buy more!

I have the set of three of these compression packing cubes and the zip on them feels really sturdy. I’ve definitely given them a good test!! They come with a little handle and the material feels smooth too so they slide in together nicely.

It comes with two small cubes and one larger one and I find the smaller size good for underwear, bikinis and tops whilst the larger is perfect for things like trousers and maxi dresses.

These seem pretty decent quality for the cost and the fact these come in a pack of six is great. The zipper isn’t as robust as the Thule ones I also use but that’s the trade off with the cost.

I do like the fabric finish at the bottom of them but the netting has a touch of a shiny cheaper feel.

Whether you want to maximise your packing space and know where everything is, or you are ready to invest in some packing accessories that will make your trip feel more luxe, compression packing cubes are a great thing to have. Why not treat yourself, or a travel-loving friend?

Compression Packing Cubes We'd Like to Test

These are some other brands that have caught our attention, but we haven’t bought these ourselves yet.

I have seen these everywhere on Instagram – and they look LUSH! These packing cubes are from a small business owned by Norwegian travel content creator Maddie Borge.

These do start at a higher price point and only come in packs of two, but they are definitely the prettiest packing cubes I’ve ever seen.

Now if you’re just looking for more bang for your buck, this is the set for you. This EIGHT (yes, really) piece set comes with two small bags, two large bags, one extra large bag, a toiletry bag, a shoe bag and a laundry bag.

I’ve not tested these ones myself but they’re frequently on sale and have over 2,700 reviews with an average rating of 4.5 stars.
