Now I love a cheap stay AND I love a 5 star stay – and I know you do too! So, knowing the cheapest 5 star winter sun destinations means you can score a great deal on your next winter holiday.

What is a 5 Star destination?

Hotel’s star ratings are based on facilities, and do vary by country. Generally speaking, a 5 star hotel will offer up much more in the way of swimming pools, spas, restaurants and gym and wellness offerings. If you’re curious to know more, I wrote a whole article about it! Plus, don’t forget you can always give your stay a boost by requesting a free upgrade… you’ve got nothing to lose!

The Top 10

So here they are – the top 10 places, ranked 10 to 1, where you can bag a 5 star holiday for less. The prices below are all average prices, per person, for a 7-night stay for 2 adults.

10. Cape Verde

Santa Maria, Sal, Cabo Verde

Cape Verde is an increasingly popular spot for winter sun. You can now fly direct to this collection of islands just off the West African coast from the UK – it takes about 6 hours. It’s just one hour beind the UK in wintertime though, so it’s a good choice if you don’t want a huge time difference. Not to mention the fantastic sunny weather that’s perfect for forgetting about the grey and drizzle back home.

9. Maderia

Winter Sun Destinations

Next up we have another island destination, this time off Africa’s northwestern coast – Maderia. It’s famous for stunning natural landscapes and mild temperatures that last all year round. There’s plenty to do here, whether you want to hike the famous levadas (trails), visit the lush gardens or unwind in a natural seawater swimming pool. There’s also no time difference compared to the UK, so it’s super convenient.

8. Marrakesh

Marrakesh is a great option if you want milder weather but not huge travel times – the flight is around 4 hours from the UK.  It’s also a bit quieter in the winter months, so if you get overwhelmed by hustle and bustle, it’s a great time to check out the medina. Choose a central stay in the city or a resort somewhere like Palmeraie or Agdal.

7. Sharm El Sheikh

Sharm El Sheikh Egypt cheapest 5-star winter sun destinations

Sharm El Sheikh makes an ideal destination for a winter escape, with a huge coastline hugging the warm waters of the Red Sea. Families with little ones will appreciate the shallow beaches, while big kids can get stuck into watersports like diving. Head into Sharm’s centre to barter for souvenirs from the bazaars and enjoy some local delicacies.

6. Hurghada

Hurghada is another Egyptian Red Sea resort that’s right up there when it comes to cheap 5-star getaways. Choose a hotel with a private beach and you might never leave all week long! Sink your toes into the soft white sands, or don some fins and head out to dive the coral reefs. There’s also El Dahar bazaar in the old town and the upscale marina district to explore.

5. Cyprus

Ayia Napa, Cyprus cheap winter sun

Cyprus is a beach-lover’s dream, with loads of Blue Flag beaches, crystal-clear waters and resorts that have everything you could possibly need.  Whether you head for Paphos on the west coast, with its historic old town and harbour, family-friendly Protaras or the beaches of Limassol, you’re sure to enjoy your budget-friendly winter escape.

4. Antalya

Antalya is where I enjoyed my very own 5 star winter break in 2026 – it’s perfect for escaping the grey UK winter. You might not get wall-to-wall sun, but there’s plenty of mild weather, and any showers – if they come at all – don’t hang about for long. Choose a resort like Lara Beach for family-friendly vibes, Kas for charm or Side for shallow seas and impressive history.

Chelsea says

I snapped up a brilliant package deal on TravelSupermarket for a 7-night stay at the 5-star Premium All Inclusive Akka Antedon in Antalya for just £489pp in January – compared to £1,729pp in peak summer, a saving of 72%. Not all facilities were open, but once I took off the cost of flights, I only needed to get £56 of value a day to ‘break even’ – which was no problem thanks to the modern room, stunning spa and well-stocked buffet and lobby lounge. Temperatures during my stay were capped at around 16°C, but it was far better than the doom and gloom of the UK, and I even managed some T-shirt weather by the beach!

3. Algarve

Algarve Portugal

The Algarve is home to Portugal’s best beaches, and with its mild climate and sunny weather, it’s the perfect spot for a winter escape. Albufeira is the most celebrated resort here, but there are great beaches all over – in places like Portimao, Lagos and Faro. Again there’s no time difference for this destination, so you can really make the most of your time away.

2. Malta

As you can see I’ve enjoyed a bougie winter break in Malta myself – it’s a great opportunity to bag a 5 star stay at a bargain price. Whether you stay in cultural Valetta, lively St Julians or charming Gozo, you’ll find an accommodation that suits you down to the ground. James and I hired tuk tuks to do an island tour, which was really fun, but there’s plenty on offer from boat tours to wine tastings.

1. Tunisia

Hammamet Tunisia

Tunisia takes the top spot in our list of the cheapest 5 star winter sun destinations. Come for the warm sunny days, sparkling turqouise seas and warm North African welcome. Hammamet has got you covered with resorts and nightlife – or plump for Sousse with its historic medina and enormous sandy beach. Stay horizontal all week or mix it up with cultural excursions, activities and water sports.

Chelsea says

Tunisia and Egypt are the biggest standouts of the top 10 for me, thanks to their serious value for money. With the average price starting at just £411pp, it really shows how much value for money you can get in Tunisia – especially when you look at the cheapest deals possible; here you can easily snap up an All Inclusive deal in  winter for under £300pp! Egypt too has many bargains, and with both destinations offering up huge resorts next to stunning sandy beaches, it proves that booking an alternative destination can save you a fortune.

My Top Tips For Finding Cheap Winter Sun

I’ve popped down the things I think about before I hit that ‘book’ button – it’s saved me SO much money over the years!

#1 Compare package prices before you book

The easiest way to find a 5 star bargain is to compare lots of deals in one place. Using TravelSupermarket means you can quickly check package prices across multiple providers, spot the cheapest options, and avoid overpaying for the exact same holiday.

#2 Travel out of season - and avoid peak weeks

5 star winter sun prices can jump massively around Christmas, New Year and February half term. If you can travel in quieter weeks – like early December or January – you’ll often find much better value for the same hotel and destination.

#3 Be flexible with airports and travel days

A small change can make a big difference. Trying a different departure airport, or flying midweek instead of at the weekend. It can often unlock cheaper flights and packages, bringing a 5 star trip into budget.

#4 Look beyond the obvious winter sun hotspots

Popular destinations can be expensive year-round because demand remains high. Choosing an alternative that still delivers warmth – like Tunisia, Turkey or Egypt – can often get you more for your money, especially when it comes to 5 star resorts.

#5 Don’t book on star rating alone - check the reviews

5 star doesn’t always equal luxury, so it’s worth digging a bit deeper. Look at what’s included, check recent guest reviews and watch out for things like all-inclusive options, heated pools, spa access and whether restaurants and facilities are fully open in winter. The latter can sting you whether you’re booking a cheap stay or a luxury getaway!

Escape For Less To One Of The Top 10 Cheapest 5 Star Winter Sun Destinations

This top 10 list shows that a 5 star winter sun escape is a lot more achievable than people might think – as long as you’re willing to travel out of season and be a little adventurous with where you want to go.

With destinations like Tunisia averaging just £411pp, it proves 5 star doesn’t always mean a big price tag. This is especially true in winter, when hotels often drop prices to fill their rooms, so your budget really goes further.

What’s also interesting is what doesn’t appear in the top 10, with winter favourites like the Canary Islands failing to chart. It’s a great reminder that sometimes the most popular destinations come with the highest prices, so if you’re happy to look elsewhere, you can bag incredible 5 star value for a lot less.
