Get familiar with Amsterdam on a walking tour

Amsterdam-Centrum, Amsterdam, Netherlands

When you first arrive in a city, one of the best ways to familiarise yourself is to head out and stroll the streets!

If you google ‘Amsterdam’ and ‘self guided walking tour’ you’ll find plenty of routes to try. The great thing about Amsterdam is it’s a pretty compact city, so even if you decide to explore with no plan, you can’t really miss the main sights!

If you want to join a group, then you can opt for a free tour that operates on a tip-what-you-wish basis, or splash out and pay for one with a theme like art or history.

The city centre of Amsterdam is also known as Centruum or the Canal Ring - and is made up of lots of tiny neighbourhoods that overlap one another. Each one has plenty of attractions, eateries, characterful streets and buzzing market squares to explore. We love Jordaan on the northern side, a super charming neighbourhood that’s full of cute boutiques, inviting cafes and quirky museums, and De Pijp towards the south, a zone with boho roots that has a chilled neighbourly vibe and loads of independent stores and eateries.
