Viray Vacay: Delicious Basque Cheesecake

We’ve got a bit of a twist on the usual viral vacay this week. Trying traditional Basque cheesecake in Spain is on my 2026 bucket list, so I’m taking this TikTok as my inspiration!

@jacksdiningroom‘s TikTok featuring the Basque cheesecake at popular local spot La Vina has gone viral – and you’ll be happy to know this cheesecake won’t break the bank either.

This style of cheesecake is named after the Basque region, which is in the western Pyrenees and lies across both Spain and France. La Vina pintxo bar is in the foodie city of San Sebastian, and is credited with being the birthplace of this delicious dessert.

How viral? The TikTok has 4.8M views.

How much? A serving of Basque cheesecake at La Vina includes 2 slices and costs €6.

Now €6 is a very reasonable price for a couple of pieces of cheesecake, but if you want to taste the real deal – well you’ll need to add on a nights’ stay in San Sebastian too. So let’s look at some San Sebastian accommodation options!

Budget

Colo Colo Hostel, San Sebastian, Spain

Colo Colo hostel San Sebastian

Colo Colo Hostel in San Sebastian is a clean and modern hostel with wooden bed ‘pods’, giving you plenty of privacy.

Choose from a single or double bed in mixed dorm rooms. Communal areas like bathrooms and the kitchen are keep spotless by staff. The location is pretty unbeatable, just a 10 minute walk from the Amara station and about the same from La Vina for cheesecake.

How much? Dorm beds start at £18 per night.

Mid-range

Casa Nicolasa, San Sebastian, Spain

Casa Nicolasa is a welcoming two-star hotel just 5 minutes’ walk from La Concha beach, on the edge of the old town.

It’s modern, comfortable and cosy, with welcoming staff – close to the centre of the action yet removed enough to be quiet and relaxing. You get great value for money with a stay here, and its just 5 minutes from La Vina for cheesecake as well.

How much? A night in their Deluxe Double Room starts at just £55 per night.

Treat

Hotel Catalonia Donosti, San Sebastian

This fancy 4-star hotel is a gloriously luxe base if you fancy a treat stay in San Sebastian.

The facilities at Catalonia Donosti are pretty impressive – there’s a rooftop swimming pool with lovely views, and a spa – and the location is super central.

It’s perched in the upper part of town, but the elevator will take you down to the level of the cobblestone old town, which you can reach in about 10 minutes; La Vina is about 20 minutes’ walk.

How much? You can bag a double room from £95 per night.
