Isles of Scilly

The Isles of Scilly are one of those places that make you gasp and go ‘is that really in the UK?’ but yes, yes it is!
Travelling with Isles of Scilly Travel, it’s actually cheaper to do a day return journey but since you have to complete it in one day, it doesn’t give you much time to explore. Tickets get more expensive during peak times, i.e. during the summer.

The Best UK to British Islands Ferries
If you’re wondering what counts as ‘British Islands’, you won’t be the first – nor the last! But it’s because the islands of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are not part of the United Kingdom. In fact, they each have their own parliament, government and laws!
But geography aside, all that really matters at this moment is that they are brilliant destinations to visit by ferry and if you’re travelling directly from the UK, you don’t even need to remember your passport to get there!
Isle of Man

Did you know that the Isle of Man is a UNESCO Biosphere reserve and Dark Sky area so great for nature and star gazing? And you can head to explore it with the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company which has routes including:

The Best UK to Europe Ferries
Growing up, the ferry was the answer to many of the holidays my family would take if we wanted to leave the UK. As there were six of us, it often worked out as the cheapest way. That, and there’s nothing quite like not having to worry about baggage allowances when you have a car to fill up instead!
France

Now, there’s quite a few options here from different ferry operators, including DFDS, Irish Ferries, P&O Ferries, and Brittany Ferries.

Book a 30 hour return trip to France from £26 per person when travelling as a foot passenger. Or book a 5 day return for a car and 2 passengers from £186.
Netherlands

The Netherlands is another great option if you’re planning to take the ferry – it always surprises me how quickly you can reach this country after you get off the boat!
Again, there’s a few different ferry operators offering routes here including DFDS, P&O Ferries and Stena Line:
DFDS
From | To | Duration | Adult Foot Passenger + cabin | 2 Adults + Car + Standard Cabin | 2 Night Mini Cruise for 2 |

Harwich | Hook of Holland | 5 hours 30 mins / 8 hours overnight | £50.96 | £102 one way |

Spain

The final destination on our radar is less of a go to option when it comes to ferry travel but the great news is that yes, you can get to Spain by sea too! These are longer routes, but are perfect if you’re hoping to reach somewhere further afield with your own car in tow.
These routes are all with Brittany Ferries:
Brittany Ferries
From | To | Duration | Adult Foot Passenger | 2 Adults + Car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Plymouth | Santander | 20 hours 15 mins | from £90 | £141 |
Portsmouth | Bilbao | 32 hours 30 mins | from £90 | £252 |
Portsmouth | Santander | 31 hours | from £90 | £141 |
Prices shown are lowest fares and discounts may be available for additional adults, and also for children and infants.

However, I do think taking a 20 hour ferry to Santander would be a great adventure, especially with their ORCA co-ordinated deck watches for marine life. Who needs cruises when you can make that a part of your trip instead?!!
