Now let’s be straight up, accommodation in Venice is generally expensive. A modest budget will get you pretty functional accommodation – but does that really matter when you’re in one of the most beautiful cities in the world?!
Plus, if you visit during the winter you can score great deals on fancier places!

The Best Hostels in Venice
A&O Hostel Mestre

Venice doesn’t have many hostels, so finding a bargain stay can be tricky. But this hostel is a good bet – and it’s in Mestre, on the Venetian mainland.
Mestre is a popular spot to stay in if you haven’t got a big budget – accommodation is significantly cheaper than it is on Venice island, and you can get the train there in just 10 minutes.
The location of A&O Hostel Mestre is super handy, with shops and eateries close by, and it’s also close to the airport bus stops. Dorms have ensuite bathrooms and a light and electrical socket by each bed. There are affordable private rooms here too.
There’s a big communal seating area and a bar where you can grab a drink or two. Overall it’s a great value option with everything you need to make a solid base for your Venice adventure.
Amenities: Dorms and private rooms, family rooms, air con, breakfast available, bar, lockers, 24 hour front desk
Prices: Dorm beds start at around £14 per person, per night
Anda Venice

This bright and breezy hostel is just three minutes’ walk from Mestre train station, from where you can catch the train to Venice in 10 minutes. So if your budget is super strict, this place is a good bet.
Dorms are what you’d expect – bunk beds with a light and charging socket each, a personal locker and an ensuite bathroom for each room. They also do well-priced twin and double rooms. There’s air con here as well, and you can hire towels and padlocks if you aren’t bringing your own.
Common areas are great for meeting fellow travellers – there are areas for eating and working, and there’s outdoor space too. This hostel lays on activities and parties on the weekend, and there’s a bar serving basic meals as well as drinks.
Amenities: Dorms and private rooms, family rooms, air con, breakfast available, bar, lockers, 24 hour front desk
Prices: Dorm beds from around £16 per night
Generator

If you want a cheap spot that’s on an actual island, then sign up for a stay at Generator. It’s on Giudecca, just to the south of the main island of Venice.
This is a gorgeous old building that was once a warehouse – think exposed beams and brick walls. It’s very cool, and in keeping with the Generator brand – plus it’s a lively spot.
There are communal spaces for mingling, and both dorms and private rooms for sleeping. Some bathrooms are in the rooms, others are outside. Dorm bunks have a light, charging point, shelf and locker. You might even bag an epic view of the lagoon!
Just bear in mind that to get anywhere, you’ll need to use a water taxi (vaporetto). It’s not far – just 10 minutes to St Marks Square for example – but multiple trips will mount up. So this spot is best suited to visitors staying a day or two.
Amenities: Dorms and private rooms, family rooms, air con, breakfast available, bar, lockers, 24 hour front desk
Prices: Dorm beds start at around £20 per night
Ostello S. Fosca

Stay at Ostello S. Fosca and you’ll get to retreat to a historic monastery with a leafy garden every night. This hostel is in Cannaregio, a local spot on the main island which is way quieter than the more touristy parts – by the time you leave, you’ll feel like a local!
In Italy, a hostel might be a standard youth/ traveller hostel, or it might have a connection to the church – this one is the latter. Inside, it’s functional, with white walls and brightly coloured accents. Dorms and bathrooms are spotless, and a lot of rooms actually have single beds rather than bunks. It takes around 15 minutes to walk here from Venice’s main train station.
There’s a kitchen for rustling up your meals and communal areas for mingling and relaxing. The hostel borders a canal and you can actually pop down there via some steps from the garden and watch the water for a peaceful few minutes. This might be a local spot but don’t worry, there are plenty of bars and restaurants around, and you won’t be fighting off so many tourists to get into them!
Amenities: Dorms and private rooms, family rooms, air con, lockers, luggage storage
Price: Dorm beds start at £28 per night
Meininger Venezia Mestre

We’re big Meininger fans here at Holiday Expert – this popular hostel chain is in locations right across Europe. This one is in Mestre, practically next door to the train station – so just a 10 minute train ride and you’ll be on the main island of Venice!
Dorms are bright and clean, and pretty spacious – all of them have a seating area or desk in the room as well. Bathrooms are ensuite. You can also book private rooms here for 2, 3 or 4.
There’s a kitchen here for making your meals, and a supermarket within walking distance. There are loads of communal areas for chilling or working, and there’s a laundry room too.

Another spot in Mestre, Staycity Aparthotel is perfect if you like a bit more space and the facilities to cook for yourself. Your studio contains a kitchen area with a microwave, stovetop, dishwasher, kettle and toaster.
This is a modern hotel that’s spick and span, so if you’re not one for staying somewhere that’s a little rough around the edges, then you’ll like this place. It’s easy to get to the train station from here, and there’s a supermarket round the corner for buying groceries. This is a good spot for a family stay, given the space and facilities you get with a studio. You can also store your luggage for free after checkout, which is really helpful.
Amenities: family rooms, kitchenette, fitness centre, lift, bar, breakfast available, 24-hour front desk, luggage storage
Price: Rooms start at around £65 per night
Hotel Aurora

Hotel Aurora is a solid choice if you’re looking for a budget-friendly stay. It’s in Mestre on the mainland – where you’ll find the bulk of the better-value accommodation – but just 5 minutes’ walk to the bus stop, from where you’ll get to Venice in less than 20 minutes.
Rooms are functional and clean. This spot won’t win any prizes for its decor, but that’s not why you’re staying – it’s a good-value and practical choice for visiting Venice. As with many hotels, prices tend to rise dramatically during some periods, but there are loads of nights for under £100 throughout the year – the cheapest night we could find was £69.
The beds are comfortable, the staff warm and welcoming and the location ideal – there are plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance. You can pay a bit extra for a delicious and plentiful breakfast.
Amenities: Family rooms, bar, breakfast available, 24-hour front desk
Price: Rooms start at around £75 per night
Hotel Al Gobbo

Hotel Al Gobbo is a cheap and cheerful hotel in Cannaregio, removed from the hustle and bustle but still close enough to walk everywhere you want to.
Rooms are basic, clean and functional – some have a shared bathroom and some have views over the square outside. It’s a short walk from the train station – around 5 minutes – and about 25 minutes to St Mark’s square. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants around, where you can soak up the vibes of this local corner of Venice. You can leave your luggage here too.
Amenities: air conditioning, luggage storage

Some have amazing canal views, which is pretty epic – this would be a dreamy place for a romantic weekend away.
Put on your walking shoes and you’ll have the run of the city – most attractions are walkable within around 20 minutes. It’s just over 5 minutes’ walk to the Grand Canal, where you can catch the vaporetto or even take the gondola traghetto (shuttle) across, which costs just a few euros.
Amenities: Family rooms, air conditioning, terrace, luggage storage, 24-hour front desk
Price: Rooms start at around £86 per night (min 2 night stay)
Palazzo Cendon

Palazzo Cendon Piano Antico is in Cannaregio, a calmer spot away from the madness of the main tourist areas, but still within easy walking distance. There’s a nice local vibe here – streets are calmer and the canals are wider.
You can live out all your Venice palazzo dreams here – historic building, check; canalside location, check. Rooms are comfy and clean, some with canal views.
For the price, the location and historic vibes are unmatched. There’s a vaporetto stop close by and it’s walkable from the main station too – around 10 minutes. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants nearby

Price: Rooms start at around £87 per night
The Best Mid-Range Hotels in Venice
Granda Sweet Suites

Granda Sweet Suites is in the lively San Marco district, within easy walking distance of most of the island’s sights. The suites are in a historic palazzo on the Grand Canal, and the decoration is pretty bougie – all dramatic headboards and deep-jewel toned fabrics.
Now bear in mind this building is several hundred years old, and showing its age in places – but it’s all part of the faded glamour here. The hotel has a garden as well as a generous communal area with canal views. Rooms are pretty varied in size, and some have totally epic views, which is really the main draw of staying here. You can happily chill and watch the boats and gondolas go by – dreamy! For this location at this price, you can’t really beat it.
Amenities: Family rooms, air conditioning
Price: Rooms start at around £125 per night.
Combo Venezia

This hostel – which just has private rooms, not dorms – is in Canareggio, which is a great spot to stay in if you want to be on the main island but away from the main tourist spots. It’s a great budget option if you’ve been baulking at hotel prices.
This is a beautiful building that was a monastery, and the courtyard is pretty special, as are the arcaded spaces where you can chill with a book and perhaps even channel the monks for a moment or two!
The design is pretty cool – pared-back but stylish. There’s even a loft room that’s almost like a little one-bedroom apartment – which for the price is a steal. Some rooms have kitchenettes, desks and canal views.
There are loads of spacious communal areas, including an inviting restaurant/ bar space. It’s 100m from the Fondamente Nove vaporetto stop, and from there it’s about 25 minutes to the main train station. You can walk to St Mark’s square in 20 minutes.

Alloggi Santa Sofia

Alloggi Santa Sofia is in Cannaregio, where a lot of the more affordable hotels on the main island of Venice are located.
Rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable, with some bougie furnishings like opulent headboards to bring a touch of Venetian glamour. It’s a short walk to the nearest vaporetto stop for catching the boat, or you can stick to dry land – it’s a 10 minute walk to the Rialto bridge, 15 minutes to St Mark’s Square and 20 minutes to the Accademia bridge.
If you have to visit Venice during the high season, then this place has reasonable prices even in the most popular months. And be aware – their rooms don’t stick around for long!

The Best Boutique Hotels in Venice
Il Palazzo Experimental

The Venetian outpost of the Experimental hotel group occupies a fabulous spot on the Zattere, in the Dorsodouro district. Here you can watch great sunsets every evening, and enjoy views of Giudecca island.
The decor of Il Palazzo Experimental is inspired by its history. It was a naval headquarters, so interiors are cheerfully nautical – think bright sailor stripes and shades of red and blue.
There’s a cosy courtyard garden and an inviting restaurant – as well as outdoor seating with great views. For a cheap and cheerful aperitivo, head to Osteria al Squero and balance your spritz and cicchetti (snacks) on the wall in the sun, Venetian style.
Amenities: Family rooms, bar, restaurant, terrace, room service, 24-hour front desk
Price: Rooms start at around £175 per night
Palazzina Fortuny

Palazzina Fortuny is in a great spot for your Venice adventure – in the central San Marco district, under 10 minutes’ walk from the Rialto bridge and St Mark’s Square.
Bedrooms are simply decorated, with injections of colour coming from the headboard and curtains, and there are posh marble bathrooms too. You don’t get the original features and traditional Venetian accents here, but the decor is still aesthetically pleasing and the rooms are generously-sized.
This hotel takes its name from Museo di Palazzo Fortuny nearby, a Gothic building that was once the home of celebrated Spanish artist Mariano Fortuny. It houses a pretty eclectic mix of items from Fortuny’s collection and has a unique charm – it’s certainly worth a look.
Note there’s no breakfast available here – but it’s a great excuse to sample treats from the local pastry shops.

Price: Rooms from £157 per night
B&B Al Pozzo di Luce

Al Pozzo di Luce is a great option if you like your hotels more on the contemporary side. Whilst there are plenty of exposed beams that nod to the building’s heritage, the place feels fresh and bright.
Walls are painted white and furniture is neutral, and there’s a breakfast room where you can have your fill of delicious fresh pastries each morning. Host Alessandra provides a warm welcome and is ready with help and reccomendations. You’re just a couple of minutes’ walk from the water taxi stop where you can catch the boat to the islands Murano and Burano, or Santa Lucia station. You can walk to Piazza San Marco in about 20 minutes.
Amenities: Air conditioning, free breakfast
Price: Rooms start at around £196
Novocento Boutique Hotel

You’re in for a treat at Novecentro Boutique Hotel, a pint sized gem just minutes from Piazza San Marco. There are just 9 rooms here, so you’ll really enjoy that boutique feel and personalised service.
The decor is classic Venice – traditional wooden headboards, heavy fabrics and the most incredible windows. This spot is family run too, so it’s like an (exceptionally deluxe) home from home. There’s a cosy courtyard garden here, and you get a tasty breakfast included.
Location-wise you’re around the corner from Campo Santo Stefano, a super central spot that will have you at St Mark’s basilica or the Accademia bridge in 5 minutes. Ask the friendly staff for local restaurant recommendations – they really know their stuff!
Amenities: Garden, air conditioning, free breakfast, laundry, luggage storage
Price: Rooms start at around £210
