The Best Small Cabin Suitcases With Removable Wheels for Ryanair, Wizz Air and EasyJet

What is a suitcase with removable wheels?

A suitcase with removable wheels is… well exactly that. It’s a suitcase where the wheels come off, and you don’t need to pack a screwdriver or anything like that to do it.

Each wheel is removed with the press of a button, and clicks back on easily when you need. The case will usually come with a little pouch for you to keep the wheels in too.

What is the point of removable wheels?

The point of removable wheels is to increase the amount of usable luggage space you have.

Airlines specify maximum dimensions for small cabin bags – and wheels will eat up a chunk of that precious allowance.

Removing the wheels means the allowable dimensions can be taken up entirely by the bag itself – which gives you more packing room.

And if you’re asked to fit the case into the baggage sizer, it’s a straightforward process to pop the wheels off – and reattach them later on.

Can you bring a suitcase on board as an underseat bag?

I’ve heard from people that budget airlines can be funny about you bringing a suitcase on board as your personal item.

The thing is, airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air mention backpacks or handbags when they refer to small cabin bags in their bag policies – but it’s actually worded as a suggestion, not a rule.

We managed to get a definitive answer from Ryanair that you can – check out the article below for more information.

But essentially if your bag fits in the baggage sizer and the airline’s terms do not mandate a particular type of bag, then it should be able to go on board with you – because it’s within the size requirements.

My Top Tips for Packing Your Free Small Underseat Bag

WOW Travel suitcase in the ryanair baggage sizer

1. Check your airlines’ measurements

Even if you think you know your airline’s maximum luggage dimensions, it doesn’t hurt to check before you travel because they do differ.

Ryanair and Wizz Air are both the smallest at 40x30x20cm; easyJet is a bit more generous at 45x36x20cm.

2. Watch the weight

It’s not just size you need to watch out for; some of the airlines have weight allowances too and they might want to check this at the gate.

Ryanair doesn’t actually specify a weight limit in their bag policy. Wizz Air’s is 10kg and EasyJet’s is 15kg.

3. Keep eyes on the wheel pouch

The last thing you want to do is lose the wheels to your case – so when you pop them off, put them straight in the pouch. Ideally shove them in a pocket so you have them handy.
