When I popped into Primark the other day looking for one of their latest cabin bags – a wheelie backpack specifically – I was stopped in my TRACKS!
I saw a different bag that I just had to snap up right away – a suitcase with removable wheels!
I just had to get this and test it out right away. As ever the important question is: will it fit in the airline baggage sizers? Specifically, Ryanair, Easyjet and WizzAir…
Can you bring a personal item with wheels on board?
I am always on the look out for great cabin bags that fit the smaller dimensions of a ‘personal item’. This is what most budget airlines now call the bag they let you bring on board for free.
Your personal item is the bag that goes under the seat in front of you – a lot of travellers use a backpack, holdall or handbag for this bag.
Now, while none of the budget airlines – Ryanair, Easyjet, WizzAir – say in their policies that you can’t take a suitcase as your personal item, I’ve had mixed reviews from some of you as to how airline staff feel about you having a suitcase as your underseat bag.
Also, airlines tend to use images of backpacks and handbags to represent a personal item – and I think leads travellers to assume that only these types of bags are allowed.
Either way, wheels can add annoying bulk that feels like a waste, and it can be a tight squeeze when you’re trying to fit your bag in the baggage sizer. So for ages I have been searching for a smaller-sized suitcase where you can take the wheels off.
And now, where do I find it?! At Primark, of all places!

This Primark suitcase with removable wheels has two compartments: one with a zip and one with a strap.
There’s a grab handle on top and a pull-out handle too.
It’s pretty straightforward to remove the wheels – you just press the small button next to each one.
The suitcase also comes with a little bag that you can store the wheels in when you’ve taken them off.
What are the measurements of the viral Primark suitcase?
Now this suitcase is labelled as measuring 40x25x20cm once you’ve removed the wheels.
Of course I had to measure it myself as well and I can confirm – it is 40x25x20cm!
The suitcase wears 2kg with nothing inside it.
What can you fit inside the viral Primark suitcase?
As for what you can fit inside it, I managed to pack in:
👚 2 x t-shirts, 1 x midi skirt, 1 x long dress and 1 x jumper, as well as enough socks, pants and bras for 3 days – oh and a bikini as well!

👝 1 x toiletries bag
🔋 1 x electronics bag
🔌 1 x travel adaptor
📸 1 x phone tripod
The casing for the pull-out handle does take some space away from the main compartment, but I am so impressed that I could fit all this in! And it closed without a fight!

Ryanair have changed their small cabin bag allowance since this article was published. It is now 40 x 30 x 20 cm.
Now it’s the million dollar question… does this suitcase fit in the Ryanair baggage sizer?!
