My Glasto Experience with roadsurfer

For the past couple of years, when James and I have gone to Glastonbury, we’ve taken a campervan – and let me tell you, there’s no looking back! It’s so nice to have a proper bed, running water, a kitchen and even power for things like charging up your phone.

What type of campervan did we hire?

We hired a Couples Cottage, which is a ‘sprinter-style campervan’ which means you may get a Mercedes Benz Sprinter model, or something like it. For example, the last two years, we have driven a MAN Knaus Boxdrive.

It was just under 6m in length, and had a bed, kitchen area, dining area, bathroom with warm water shower and full-standing height – which made it feel super spacious.

Our van was for two, but you can get other models with a pop-up roof, which lets more people sleep inside. So it would be great for families.

Where did we sleep in the campervan ?

We slept in a double bed at the back of the campervan – it was sooo comfy! If you didn’t know – because he makes a point of telling everyone – James is 5 foot 8 and a half, and there was quite a lot of space still between his head and the wall of the van when he lay down. I’d say even if you’re 6ft you should be plenty comfortable in this size bed.

Did we cook in the campervan?

Yes! And I swear the kitchen facilities were better than some of the student digs I had at uni. There was a double electric stove top and an OVEN, which we heated samosas in. We didn’t try a full roast dinner or anything but where there’s a will there’s a way I’m sure!

I should say that we did not get an oven when we booked the Couples Cottage last year – so facilities may change based on what model you get!

Where did we store things in the campervan?

You’ll be surprised just how much storage space can be carved out in a campervan. There was storage everywhere we looked! There were a couple of overhead bins in the seating area, another in the cooking area – as well as a load of drawers – four in the bed area, and a load of storage space beneath the bed, where we kept big bulky things like our suitcases.

As for food, we kept that in the kitchen storage. There was a decent size fridge for keeping things cold – much bigger than a hotel minibar, for example – and there was even a freezer, which we used to store ice cubes for our drinks.

Was there air conditioning?

There was air conditioning, but only when driving. It did have something called auxiliary air heating though, which means it stays warm inside even when it’s cold.

How did the campervan loo work?

It was pretty straightforward to be honest, and that’s not just because I left the logistics to James! There’s a lever you open when you want to use it, and once you’ve done your business and flushed, you close it again. This keeps everything nice and secure.

When you’re ready to empty it, you unlock the lever on the side of the van, pull out the container and, well… dispose of it in the designated disposal area of your campsite.

Was there a shower?

Yes! This got me made up! In the toilet, the panel with the sink and mirror could be pulled outwards on a hinge – kind of like a door opening – leaving a space to shower.

The sink tap is on a hose so you just pull that out and pop it into the fixing on the wall to take your shower – GENIUS.

So – if you fancy a campervan trip on the open road with all your home comforts, then give roadsurfer a try.
